Our Kilns
The most power-hungry thing you can do at a pottery is of course fire the kiln. Slowly reaching a temperature of over a thousand degrees Celcius is no joke, so you need a reliable fuel source that burns as cleanly and efficiently as possible – and that is of course Gas.
We have two large gas-fired kilns. Our largest kiln was custom-built and is nearly as old as the pottery itself. It is able to fire extremely large pieces, and huge amounts of pottery, but the potter has to be on active duty regulating the gas pressure for nearly twenty four hours without rest, so we bought a more modern one as well. This one is smaller, though still large enough for almost all of our purposes. It is very well designed, being easy to stack and unload, is partly computer controlled, and has a slightly shorter firing cycle, meaning less strain on the potter.
We also have two smaller electric kilns for test firings. These can be very convenient, but they never fire the colours as nicely as the gas kilns.
