The Pottery Staff
Our style is highly unique and involves techniques developed by our team over many years. Each stage of the production involves a different person, as each stage involves different skills, perfected over many years of practice and experience.
Our potters, Johannes and Steve, form the pieces by hand on the potter's wheel.
Our decorator, Julie, carves a freehand design into the clay when it reaches the “leather hard” stage (usually when it is a few days old)
Our glazers, Regina and Maria, hand paint raw glazes onto the design once the piece is dry (drying can take weeks).
When we have enough pieces Maria stacks them all very carefully into the kiln, and when it is full Johannes starts the firing. Firing takes roughly three days (half the time heating, then half cooling), and some pieces need to be fired more than once.
Behind the scenes we also have Johannes' brother Bernhard, a talented woodworker and builder, bush furniture-maker extraordinaire Kai, clay-maker Kingsley and gardener Adrian.
And a big thank you to our ever-changing team of Wwoofers (Willing Workers on Organic Farms), who come from all over the world to help out with the many and varied things that need to be done in a place with so many strings to its bow. We've had helpers from Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, France, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, UK, Ireland, Israel, Canada, Alaska, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and even Australia!
