The Pilliga & Warumbungle Region

Activities in the Coonabarabran region

We are situated only 35km from the town of Coonabarabran, heart of a vibrant rural community.
Coonabarabran has shops, restaurants, galleries, pubs, cafes and more. It is also lucky enough to be close to two of the most unique and atmospheric natural beauties that NSW has to offer - the Warrumbungle Mts and the Pilliga Forest. As a result this pretty little place has stacks for the visitor to do and see.

Major tourist attractions in the area

The Warrumbungle National Park - one of NSW's most popular and spectacular national parks.

Sidings Springs Observatory - home to the Anglo-Australian Telescope and others, and with an excellent Exploratory.

The Crystal Kingdom - Home to a world-renowned collection of local minerals and a fabulous gift shop.

Warrumbungles Glass House - leadlighting gallery and workshop, with art gallery (including local art), gift shop and cafe.

Pilliga State Forest and Nature Reserve - The famous "million wild acres", home to ironbarks, cypress pine, birds, koalas, and...the Yowie?

The Sandstone Caves - lovely and restful spot in the East Pilliga.

Local Wineries - Wattagan Estate Winery and Herb Garden, and Coonandry Wines.

Detailed information on all of these attractions is available from the Tourist Information Centre in Coonabarabran. Phone (02) 6842 1441 or Freecall 1800 242 881. You can also visit www.coonabarabran.com for more information.

Day Trips

For those who don’t mind venturing further afield or doing a little exploring, we are neatly poised between the Central West and the North West regions, meaning that a great variety of activities, sights and experiences is within easy reach. The larger town of Narrabri, with the beautiful Mt Kaputar National Park , the Cotton Centre, shops, cinema, galleries and the Australia Telescope is only 90 minutes away. The little historical villages of the Pilliga are well worth a look, especially Pilliga itself, with its relaxing hot springs. A couple of hours drive will find you in the large and thriving centres of Dubbo (famous for the Western Plains Zoo) or Tamworth (home of the Country Music Festival) For those who prefer to avoid the bustle completely, the atmospheric Coolah Tops National Park is also in the region.

Whether you like to keep busy or do very little, there’s something for everyone. ;)

Bird Watching tours

Blue Wrens at Barkala , the leading theme in our Pottery

Barkala Farm and the adjoining Nature Reserve are home to over 120 bird species, many of which can be heard (and seen) early in the morning or as the sun cools. In mild weather, the birds will be active all day. Morning walkers will generally be accompanied by a mixture of common and more unusual species.
