At Pilliga Pottery we have popular ranges we do a lot of – Blue Wrens, Waratahs, Geckos etc – but we also like to take the time for more involved, challenging, individual pieces as well. Each of our dragon vases are stunning, unique pieces, involving hours of painstaking detail and creative energy.

This particular vase is a Lion-Dragon, a muscular, crouching creature with a wild mane, the powerful clawed forelimbs of a lion, long feathered wings, a lithe, scaled body and slightly bird-like back legs. This style of dragon definitely has a Chinese dragon in his parentage. He is a very flamboyant character, with peacock-style feathers in his wings, am extremely long tail twisted into Celtic knotwork, a long, writhing, red tongue and glossy goldlustre scales. Our decorator has pressed the scales into the damp clay one by one and done detailed texturing work on the feathers and mane, and our glazer has finished the piece off with a dramatic colour scheme, featuring navy blue, cobalt blue, goldlustre and beige, with highlights of orange-red, and wings in a beautiful blend of blues, greens and beige reminiscent of sea-foam.

The vase itself is a beautiful teardrop shape hand-thrown by our master potter, quite large and perfectly balanced. With the design wrapped almost all the way around it, it is a stunning centerpiece or feature for any room.

Our distinctive look is achieved by only glazing the design and rim of this piece, providing a dramatic contrast to the natural "sandstone" colour of our local clay. The inside of the vase is fully glazed with a clear glaze, so it is usable, although such a spectacular piece does not necessarily need anything extra!

We ship to most countries, please ask us for a quote. We take extra special care with padding and boxing to make sure the piece will be amply protected.

Please contact us if you would like to order a variation on this style of vase. Normally our decorator does dragon pieces as the mood takes her, as each one requires hours of precise, concentrated work and inspiration plays a big part. However she is happy to do dragon pieces to order, so if there is a particular style or “feel” of dragon you are after, or particular colours, just pop us an email and she will be happy to work out the details with you. She enjoys doing all sorts of mythological creatures, such as griffins, wyverns, European-styled dragons, Celtic dragons, all sorts of nameless hybrids. Dragons suit a wide variety of larger vases and vessels, including water purifiers and wall plaques. Enquiries are welcome.

Blue Wrens at Barkala , the leading theme in our Pottery

Barkala Farm and the adjoining Nature Reserve are home to over 120 bird species, many of which can be heard (and seen) early in the morning or as the sun cools. In mild weather, the birds will be active all day. Morning walkers will generally be accompanied by a mixture of common and more unusual species.
